Vacuum cleaner in a shoe, an idea conceptualised and implemented by a class I student from Tamil Nadu, a peelgroove knife for pine apple, a vibrator based overtake alarm and finally an idea every automobile should have - a noiseless horn!

These and many other such ideas had emerged and have now been listed as winners and eligible for consolation prizes by IGNITE-10, organised by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), Ahmedabad, between September 15, 2010 -- October 16, 2009 in association with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Society for Research and Initiatives in Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (SRISTI), Everonn Education Ltd and other partners. In all, 2139 such ideas, innovations and traditional knowledge practices were received from school and college students from 161 districts of 29 states & union territories of the country.

"Some ideas such as those conceptualised and implemented by students are unimaginable by adult minds. Unfortunately, Gujarat is lacking behind in terms of registrations and entries. We had received 750 entries from various schools of Uttarakhand, and merely 125 entries from Gujarat. Teachers and parents should highlight student's creative minds and we will help build on that," informed Prof Anil Gupta, chairperson, NIF.

This year three students from Gujarat, two from Ahmedabad and one from Rajkot are the recipients of the IGNITE awards which will be given by former President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The award ceremony will be held at RJMCEI, IIMA, on November 8, 2010.

Gupta continues, "This low number is despite the fact that 75% schools were covered in Ahmedabad alone, persuading students to send in innovative entries. This year, for the first time during the award ceremony, students who are going to receive the awards will also get a patent form filled for their ideas."

The students who have received awards in the four years that IGNITE have held this competition, have already filled in their patent forms and almost 90% of the prototypes have been designed for exhibition. More so, those who had entrepreneurial ideas have also been supported by NIF to form a business.

NIF is on the verge of constructing an Innovation Park, for which the budget has been sanctioned but an area of 10,000 square yard is awaited. Also, NIF has approached a corporate house who has decided to adopt around 40 best ideas, develop these into actual projects and then sell them to consumers.
