While SlutWalk as a movement has been considerably gaining momentum in India, the organisers in the wake of the recent controversy, are asking girls to wear ‘sensible’ clothes to the event, now scheduled to take place on July 24 in Connaught Place.

India’s first SlutWalk in New Delhi, organised by Umang Sabharwal on Facebook, already generated interest with some calling it a “walk for liberation” and others ridiculing it for being offensive.

Taking a cue from the Capital, Mumbai is now gearing up to host the first ever SlutWalk march.

Kickstarting this initiative in Mumbai is Harrish Iyer, an environmentalist and gay and animal rights activist. Says he, “The date and the venue and the agenda, nothing is fixed. What is there is just the intent. On Facebook, I had named this event Maal Chaal, where I wanted women of all age groups to come and walk for liberation. But a few women had a valid point when they said the term ‘maal’ was demeaning to them, I didn’t want to create any controversy and because I did agree with what they said, I decided to name it Seeti Bajao.”

The idea behind it is to have women from all over Mumbai gather at a venue with a whistle around their neck —  it’s signifying a whistle against masculinity.

Actress Shahana Goswami   thinks it will be a futile exercise. “By doing something like this, it will create a lot of noise with no results. There are others doing things that are more productive like making sure there is police protection for women in the ladies compartments in trains at night, rather than letting it become an even more unsafe place to be.

The SlutWalk in Canada was in response to a statement made by someone which spoke of the manner of dressing inviting a man to assault a woman, it was in context, and here it seems very out of context, in more ways than one. It feels like a movement for the sake of one without really addressing it.”
