It’s high time that Mumbai’s many gallery spaces transitioned to the next level. Finally, Mumbai’s galleries are utilising their space to the maximum and exposing people to different kinds of art.
Many new breed of galleries like Project 88, Chatterjee and Lal, Volte and Abhay Maskara’s art space are luring the art inclined with the promise of performance art, films and more which are open to all.
Gallery Osmosis has taken this trend a step ahead. They have begun screening films based on artists and most recently screened movies of renowned women artists Amrita Sher-Gil and Frida Kahlo. As part of their weekly film foray, over the next few Sunday’s Osmosis will be showcasing films of film-maker Arun Khopkar on many other Indian artists like Vivan Sundaram, Nalini Malani, Jehangir Sabavala and others.
Sonal Motla-Vashi of Osmosis says, “It is necessary that people of India know about their artists. We started with a Tai-chi performance that includes playing around with the shadows creatively. We are screening art films and also going to screen films by renowned film-makers like Ketan Mehta, Amol Gupte and also Pradeep Mishra.”
She adds, “We have also organised many activities involving kids and mothers with the aim of inculcating the culture of visiting art galleries and art museums amongst the kids. According to me this is very important.”
In this effort of blurring the boundaries between all kinds of arts, Sonal aspires to make many more fall in love with the art and culture of the country.
