For over thousands of years now, March 17 has been marked as a traditional, religious feast day of Saint Patrick, and as a national holiday by the Irish. One traditional symbol of Saint Patrick’s Day is the Shamrock — the common name for several kinds of three-leafed clovers native to Ireland — which is considered to bring in good luck. Also associated with the day are leprechauns (Irish fairies), the harp (ancient musical instrument), the Celtic cross, the Blarney Stone and the colour green.

St Patrick’s Day themed wedding are pretty popular in the season too. “Green, white and gold are the three major colours for a St Patrick’s Day theme,” says wedding planner Ritu, adding, “The engagement ring could have a Celtic design or you can have harpists play music,  and have a dash of green in the outfits.” And for those who aren’t getting married, there are a lot of options to celebrate too.

In the city, Irish House has Irish whiskies and beer on special offer, and some green cupcakes to go with the theme of the day.

“To celebrate the glorious tradition of Saint Patrick’s Day, we have a festive weekend full of great food, great music and the greatest Irish tradition — drinks with friends,” says Varun Kapur from The Irish House. Out of the Blue (OTB) Bandra and Powai has special offers for those who wear green — they get to guzzle free alcohol/non-alcoholic drinks worth Rs500 on an order of Rs500 worth of food. Or post a picture (in green) on OTB Facebook/Twitter and get Rs500 wine gift certificate through lucky draw. Cinnabon (Bandra and Breach Candy) and Elbow Room (Powai) too are offering some great discounts.

For a touch of the exotic to your day today, you can celebrate it with wine and great music at the third Mumbai Wine Tasting Festival.  “Wine festivals are a celebration of good life… the idea is to indulge and join in the revelry,” says Kavit Sutaria, Hiraco hospitality.

If you’re looking for a hint of authenticity, you can hear some Irish tunes as the Irish band — Palace Band — plays at the Irish theme decked Hard Rock Cafe tonight.  The servers will be wearing leprechaun hats, patrons have a choice of green beer and Irish whiskey.

Manchester United Café Bar will roll out the barrels, pump up the pipe and amplify the music to celebrate St Patrick’s Day from 11 am- 1 am with the highlight being ‘Patty’s Beer Pong Championship’.
