‘Menswear is my first love’

Clad in jeans and a classic white kurti, designer Ashish Soni does cut an impressive picture. But it should hardly be surprising given that he is counted amongst India’s finest menswear designers.

This is probably why he has been signed on as one of the finale designers for India’s first ever Men’s Fashion Week — the Van Heusen India Men’s Week (slated to take place from September 11 to 13 in Delhi).

And while the other designer duo showing at the finale are Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna, Ashish emphasises that his line will have its own identity. “I am designing this line for the man who is in his mid 30s, has worked his way up and enjoys the good life. So I am showing a fair share of corporate work wear, but I am doing so in an interesting way where even a suit can be worn differently to go with weekend attire. In that sense, it’s not just work wear, but also evening wear or something you’d wear on an outdoor trip,” he points out.

Not surprisingly, he has worked with many colours — both usual and unusual. “I have worked with  safe colours such as beige, black, white and charcoal-brown. But at the same time, I have also played a bit with pink, blue and some other unconventional colours.

The idea is to smartly incorporate these colours and come up with a truly contemporary collection,” explains Ashish. “I must admit that something like this was long overdue. Menswear in India has come a long way over the years and it was high time we had a fashion week for men.

Menswear is my first love — that’s what I had started out with. But during the last decade, due to the commercial viability of women’s fashion, I had to concentrate more on that. Now this fashion week is changing that,” he ends.
