Little did 25-year-old Ankita Chaudhry know that she will be showcasing her collection at the Pret a Porter at Paris this September! A commerce graduate from Delhi, she found her creative passion in designing and polished her skills at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi. After having gained her expertise in the field, she established SAAJ, her label in the year 2005.

We saw proof of her colourful, feminine and eclectic label at the recently-concluded Blender’s Pride Bangalore Fashion Week. The collection, titled Masakkali, she showcased saw a colourful series of bridal line and also western wear with an Indian tadka.

“My collection is dedicated to the new age girl. The series, divided into two segments, saw a bridal line and western line, both with an Indian touch. I used a plethora of colours, fabrics and silhouettes to portray each design,” explains Ankita.

The wedding collection that dominated the stage was inspired by the Mughal Era. It was a vibrant line that saw a series of lehengas, anarkalis in bright colours like haldi yellow, red and few other hues. As for the other half of the collection, the western line had stylish garments that had a touch of Indian patterns. The use of rather funky accessories like collar necklaces in various colours created magic!

What’s more? The young designer is also upbeat about showcasing her collection at Pret a Porter at Paris this year. The fashion show that brings together different labels from more than 45 countries will also see a range of Indian designs by our very own Ankita.

Being one of the few to be selected, she says, “It’s been only nine months in the industry. It’s a privilege!”

Probing about the collection she will showcase, it’s going to be a new western prêt line, she informs. “I am working on a special line keeping in mind the European clientele. It’s going to be an Indo-western line with feminine cuts. With a colour palette that ranges from yellows, pinks to green, the collection is for the young girl who is stylish, confident, edgy and smart,” she explains. With more international fashion shows on the pipeline, this girl is definitely going places!
