Rajiv Aggarwal, founder of Iandmystory.com has been trying this in India since the last eight months and he seems quite happy with the response of parents.
Iandmystory.com is a publishing house based out of New Delhi which deals with the unique concept of personalised books. Children can actually become stars by putting themselves along with their friends in any of their favourite stories. “The concept already exists in the international markets and has been found to be effective in inculcating a reading habit with children. When children see themselves in stories, it forms a very personal association in their minds and gets them interested in reading more,” says Rajiv Aggarwal.
You have to choose a story, fill out your personal details online and a personalised book gets delivered to you at the cost of Rs389. The publishing house has popular as well as new stories in genres of cricket and sports, fairy tales, fantasy, space and future, stories with an Indian flavour and Panchatantra stories.
“As of now we are not making any illustrations representing the children in the stories but only putting their names. Making illustrations is an expensive affair and we can do it only at a later stage,” says Rajiv. “However, we don’t have a habit of collecting books and building personal libraries in our homes. This will certainly encourage this habit,” he adds.
The company works with local writers and illustrators, to create simple concepts that can nurture a sense of creativity and self esteem in children. Most of the stories are essentially in the picture book format with large fonts, suitable for the age groups between 5 and 12 years.
