A total of 49 per cent of parents in the metropolis are satisfied with the level of involvement in their child's life, according to a survey which mapped emerging trends in parenting.

Conducted by research firm Nielsen across six cities - Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata -and comprising 1,819 respondents, the survey revealed that the role of father in a family cannot be underplayed.

The findings indicate that parents today have a strong desire to take out more time from their hectic work schedule and spend those extra hours with their children.

According to the survey, 94 per cent of Indian parents are convinced it is vital for fathers to spend more time with their children. On an average, they spend two hours with their kids on a week day and want to spend more than three hours.

Altogether 51 per cent of mothers across the six cities felt it is important for fathers to spend time with their children at home almost every day. Also, 83 per cent of parents in Mumbai felt it is important that both parents earmark adequate time for their child since infancy.

The study further said only 55 per cent of parents in India are satisfied with their current level of involvement in their child's life. The figure for Mumbai was 49 per cent.

The key factors causing the difference are - father is perceived more as a friend, better education and busy schedule of parents.

"A close bond with the father gives a psychological advantage to the child in his/her growing years. Today father has to take care of the family not only as an earning member but also as a support to the homemaker, in terms of responsibility in raising children," said Sudeshna Chatterjee, principal, Jamnabai Narsee School.
