Jill, wife of British Deputy High Commissioner, Peter Beckingham, will do a walkathon to raise funds for charity. She talks to DNA abouit her walkathon.

Is walking for a cause an ideal way to spread awareness?
I hope so. There are many sponsored events in UK, mostly runs but also walks. The good thing about walking is that you can talk to people on the way!

Do you think the youth understands the relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi march?
I am sure that they all learn about the Dandi march in school. Gandhi is a world figure and Indian children must all be immensely proud of him. His philosophy of fairness and respect for all remains relevent throughout the world.

How did the idea of Footsteps4Good walk come about?
Last year many people said they would have liked to join me on the Dandi march but it was too far, too hot or they didn’t have time. So I thought I would do something this year which everyone could do and take part in. There is no 10km event in Mumbai and I thought that it would also appeal to the runners. The whole point of this  is to raise money for NGOs who are doing a fantastic job helping the underprivileged. This walk won’t solve the problems, but will help fund some of the work they do.

What’s the highlight of the day?
I have had a generous sponsor who has supported  100 disadvantaged children to take part, and hopefully win the prize of a donation to their charity. I hope that some disabled people will be able to take part.

Do you generally walk a lot?
I like to walk. The good thing about walking in Mumbai is that there is always something to look at and other people to watch. Walking along Marine Drive is great as you don’t have to worry about the traffic!
