Let your home say who you are

While religious beliefs are more personal, there is always space to incorporate a bit of spirituality in your life. The Buddha is perfect for that, transcending cultures and religion. A Buddha figurine in your home is an interesting start to bringing in spirituality in your life, without going overboard.

Personal choices should drive your choice of colours, rather than popular trends. People who like things quieter and more subdued, can go in for sandstone hues, off-white shades and earth colours. And if you like the splashes of colour in your life, go for bright shades.

Bangalore has the advantage of not having extreme weathers. So we don’t need to join the rush with the rest of the word to change our home décor and colour scheme with each change of season.

Personally speaking, I prefer my home to be quiet, Zen and minimalistic. But then I have the best of both worlds. While my home is sparsely spaced, my work place is the exact opposite. Go with personal preferences here.

Furnishing fabric has taken an interesting leap in the last few years. We have moved beyond the silk and cotton and polyesters, to customising prints. Pick your fabric and specify your prints. From curtains to cushions or even runners, you can put your personal imprint on the way you dress up your home. There are even some interesting leatherette runners and mats that one can pick up.

In India, we live for festivals. And on such occasions, one should grab the opportunity to break away from the usual look of the home, to put together a more festive, colourful interior.

Mirrors are another addition in the home décor area. They are moving beyond being utility objects to visual accessories that add greater depth to a space. To create the impression of a larger space, go for large format mirrors. They are a great addition to a staircase to, helping these spaces dress up.

Dress up the staircases. Here, mirrors work really well, as do plants and little swatches of colour and carefully chosen artwork.

For areas like corridors leading up to rooms, a photo-collage is a great idea. If it’s a child’s room, create a story with the photographs of his or her growing up years and frame them. If it’s a newly-wed couple, freeze the moments together in photographs that are meaningful.

Let your home décor reflect your passion — outdoors, music photography — make sure your home reflects who you are. This personalises the space for you; don’t just buy things off the shelves.
