Let’s break free through 'emotional freedom technique'

Sonali Singh, 25, (name changed) found it hard to control her diet. With close to ten meals in a day, and a compulsive craving to empty the fridge of all its food content (into her stomach), hers seemed like a desperate situation. Singh’s obsession with food was actually a deep-seated emotional problem—a relationship break-up which she never got over even two years later.

The problem having gone completely out of control, and her body, out of shape, Singh approached Pankaj Gupta, an emotional freedom technique (EFT) practitioner to rescue her fall into a seemingly bottomless pit. Gupta, a 36-year-old part-time practitioner, sat her down and, after listening her out, tapped her main chakras to balance the flow of energies in her body. Within days, Gupta says, Singh started to feel a lot better and the answer to her emotional needs was not food anymore.

“Any addiction (smoking, drinking, drugs, excessive eating, etc) is nothing but an out-of-control behaviour, which usually is the result of an imbalance in body energies. It is this imbalance that EFT tries to even out,” explains Gupta.

EFT works on the premise that the human body is made up of various energy systems. The slightest block in any of these systems causes us pain. “EFT clears these blocks directly, with or without the involvement of the body part that is in pain. It heals the pain from the root quickly and permanently, without any medicines,” says Gupta.
The method

This technique involves tapping of the ‘master points’ in the body. These master points are those that have been scientifically identified as having a direct relation to the bodily energies. They are the same points that are also used in the practice of acupressure and acupuncture. It involves physical tapping of the master points to relive the person of the pain, whether physical or emotional.

“EFT rests on the theory that most problems arise from emotional imbalances and aims to clear these very imbalances by feeling them. Emotional pain is a branch or a guide that leads us to the root of the problem,” says Gupta.

Citing his own example, Gupta says that one doesn’t need to believe in EFT for it to take effect—it’s a scientifically proven technique. “I used to suffer from severe knee pain when I was in my mid 20s. I tried every medicine and every trick for relief, but nothing worked. Finally, I opted for EFT. I began as a complete non-believer and was shocked when 80% of my knee pain vanished within minutes of starting EFT on myself,” he exclaims. Shortly, after this, Gupta decided to learn the technique and spread its benefits to others as well.

Umesh, 30, who works for a software company in the city, also practises EFT, but only for himself and his family. “I learnt EFT through websites and YouTube videos. It was very easy to learn and quite helpful. It can ease headaches, body pain, cold and fever very quickly,” he says, adding that he used the technique to rid his family and friends from their fears and insecurities too.

Faith, they say, can move mountains. Faith in EFT can help you heal even over the telephone. Susitha P, a city-based EFT practitioner helps people through the phone and Internet. “I mostly deal with people who have psychological problems like anxiety, stress, fear, depression and so on. I tap the phone keypad to heal a person,” she says, adding that she can confirm without a doubt that it works like a charm.

EFT need not be something that is used to tackle life’s most difficult problems. It is an easy technique that comes handy in even the most trivial situations. For instance, say you are at a party and somebody says something nasty to you. For you, the party is over when your mood turned from good to bad. “However, if you are aware of EFT, you need to simply find a quiet corner, and tap yourself out of a bad mood within minutes,” says Gupta. He feels that a calm mind can handle any situation better than one which is sad or angry. “EFT helps you reach this state of calm.”

EFT practitioners ask their clients to measure their emotions on a scale of 1-10 and then use the technique in a systematic manner by tapping the meridian points of the body. “If people want to learn EFT for their personal use, they can go through websites. However, to be a practitioner, it’s best to attend a certified course. These days, even DVD courses are a good choice, provided you go through all the instructions,” says Susitha.
