Indian ad guru KV Sridhar, whose revolutionary style of painting sans paper, paint or canvas through the new tech iPad wowed audiences, is now gearing up to spread the technique further.
After displaying artworks done on an iPad and printed on archival canvas using archival inks at Mumbai's Scarecrow Gallery, Sridhar has invited aspiring artists to explore the new genre in a workshop.
"iPOPS - a preview", the first of a kind exhibition showcasing 28 paintings and which opened on June 10 is scheduled to run till June 30 when Sridhar, known as Pops, is scheduled to conduct a workshop for 25 shortlisted applicants who had sent in work samples.
"Till the late 1979-80s I used to paint regularly but then I got on to advertising and had to quit because there was no time. Digital painting did not have the same charm but with the iPad it is a different game as you can paint with a brush in your hand and can smudge lines etc," says Sridhar.
The ad guru, who says began painting at the age of 3 had been inspired by the monumental works of Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci enrolled in an art school and between 1976 and 1981 held several solo exhibitions and participated in many group shows.
His paintings are in the collections of the Andhra Pradesh Lalit Kala Academy, Salarjung Museum and several private collectors in India and abroad.
"When the whole world is in the era of cutting edge technology with hybrid cars and air taxis, we want to be something more than an art gallery. We want to give art a new perspective and Pops is doing just that," says Manish Bhatt, founder director, Scarecrow Gallery.
Bhatt who was on a judging panel discovered Sridhar doodling on his tablet and says he invited the adman to exhibit his body of work in his gallery.
"Sridhar's work locates itself in the domain of new media art practice and after cursory viewing displays degrees of conceptual sophistication," says exhibition curator Niyatee Shinde.
