On the eve of the 1st DNA After Hours Style Awards presented by Volkswagen, our four judges share with us the nail-biting moments they experienced while judging the winners.

“It’s great the way the Indian fashion industry has grown in terms of reach, appeal and global presence. If all our talented designers come together under one roof as a team to promote Indian fashion, nothing can stop us from being world leaders. These awards are a step in that direction.”
Ujjwala Raut
, supermodel

“Judging something as ephemeral as ‘style’ is never easy. Style is inborn and has nothing to do with sporting the latest trends and labels. You either have it or you don’t. Style is not something you can shop for in a fancy boutique. Mumbai is a stylish city in its own way. So are Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore. For me, style has to be effortless and non-contrived. It has to complement the individual’s personality…enhance it. Stylish is as stylish does! The list for the DNA After Hrs Style Awards was comprehensive in each category — and the winners were obvious! That’s what real style is about!”
Shobhaa De, author

“I believe style is about how a person carries himself / herself. Style is tougher than fashion. I think it was really tough to decide the winners of the Style Awards, because I think a person can wear the most fashionable clothes but not necessarily be stylish. There were a lot of points and elements we took into account. The list given to us by DNA After Hrs was a tough one, quite elaborate. But we had to choose one.”
Manish Malhotra, fashion designer

“The selection process was pretty easy. The nominations were done brilliantly and so when I went into selecting the winners, I ticked on people who were obvious winners. The concept of DNA After Hrs Style Awards is good. Fashion is a big business and a growing market and it needs the prominence which DNA is certainly providing. For a publication of this esteem to support style and fashion only goes to show how important a market it is and also helps the industry. Fashion is not just about aesthetics; it is also about business and we should give it more power.”
Karan Johar, film-maker
