Some of artist Riyas Komu’s works have been inspired by Iranian cinema, like his Petro Angel series which was selected to be shown at the Venice Biennale. And interestingly, he has now been invited to Tehran to exhibit his current works.

He says, “In my recent works, I have been using present day political scenarios as areas of interest. Especially the current political issues which revolve around Iran attract my interest greatly.” He continues, “In this show, I am working with several related issues which one should comment on. Like my work Blood Brothers addresses the most complex issue in this region — internal conflicts. Safe to Light is a work which amplifies the importance of the ordinaryin bringing back the organic stability of the countries which are constantly under political pressure and terror threats. Fragrance of a Funeral is a work which touches upon the ceremonial rituals which follows a person’s death.”
For this show, Riyas has created seven sculptures, most of them made in wood. Blood Brothers is casted in aluminum. This work has 196 pieces and is the largest in the show. The show also includes a painting titled Haleema which is exactly what the work suggests —an argument for the freedom of speech.

Freedom as a subject seems to have influenced Riyas quite a bit. The Petro Angel series is in fact inspired by filmmaker Jaffer Panahi’s film Circle which comments on the plight of women in Tehran. Another film of Panahi that has influenced Riyas is titled Offside. “This one deals with football. It is a story about five girls who are trying their level best to enter a football stadium,” explains Riyas. He says, “This movie again makes a statement about the condition of women in that region.”

Riyas’s works will be displayed in Tehran for about a week. Thereafter, they will be shown in his solo slotted for the year-end at Sakshi gallery in Mumbai.
