On Line is an exhibition of drawings that explores an independent form within the notion of contemporary art practices — it is “now being recognised as its own art form” in the modern context, and goes beyond “preparatory stage for painting or sculpture” .
Curated by Shraddha Purnaye, the exhibition will see artists likeAkbar Padamsee, KT Shiva Prasad, Sudhir Patwardhan, Bharati Kapadia, Madhao Imartey, Dilip Ranade, Yogesh Rawal, Jehangir Jani, Yashwant Deshmukh, Mithu Joardar, Prasanna Ghaisas, Santosh More and more portray their paintings. Through their drawings each artist provides an opportunity to scrutinise various purposes of drawing, from accurate description to informal notion, from social commentary to playful and inventive meandering, from psychological revelation of dramatic impact and the simple use of line to use of colour, shading and other elements.
Says Shraddha, “Drawing is primal means of symbolic communication. It predates and embraces writing and functions as a tool of conceptualisation parallel with language.
Contemporary drawing is experiencing an unparalleled surge in the art world. Previous notions that once defined drawing as being a preparatory stage for painting or sculpture have long since been cast aside.” Elaborating on it further, “Drawing is usually exploratory, with emphasis on observation, problem solving and composition. It is now fully recognised as its own art form—in the biennials, art fairs, museum exhibitions, and beyond.”
On Line delves into these essential and far-reaching concepts of this medium, exploring surface, mark, space, composition, scale, materials, and intent.“This exhibition aims to stimulate contemporary interest in drawing activity— physically, creatively and cognitively.It represents many perspectives on drawing in the field of fine art, questions preconceptions and encourages the potential for drawing as an independent form of art,” adds Shraddha.
The ongoing exhibitincludes number of works of artists created not only in contemporary style, but also in use of materials such as pencil, charcoal, pastle, pen and ink on paper, canvas and board.
