Palette playing: Winter colours aren’t necessarily just solid blacks and dull greys

Looks like most fashion designers who showcased their Autumn/Winter lines at the recently concluded Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week in the capital were substantially interested in catering to Indian buyers.

They argue that since India does not really witness the chill that Western countries experience during winters, they have the opportunity to experiment with lines that need not be heavy or cut the cold. Veterans say that since most homespun designers have a predominantly Indian clientele, gone are the days when winter collections were all about dull greys and blacks or heavy fits.

"Experiments with silhouettes are on, since most of India doesn't really have a winter. So, for most designers with buyer-strength in the country, there's no need to make outfits keeping in mind global trends. That will not work at all for them. Heavy, thick fitted and structured clothes are not for Indian winters. Now, you will see short dresses and tunics and even Indian wear matched with jackets and other comfortable wear getting more prevalent every season. Designers are understanding their market at last and are catering to it," says JJ Valaya.

Adds Ranna Gill, “Winter is no longer all about structures in silhouettes. Short dresses and other outfits that are breezy and flowing for the festive season have a very high demand now.

Jackets are a rage because they can be teamed with skirts, denims and pants. Winter is pleasant in India and so people really want to deck up. Dresses and formless ensembles for women of every size are certainly a hit this season."

Nandita Mahtani further says: “Winters are not all about black and grey and dull colours. It is a time when India celebrates and there is a long holiday. Celebration in India is always with a lot of colours and bright ones. So, this season not one colour will dominate the fashion scene. From reds, to blues, greens and other shades will dazzle."
