On a photography tour, Jatan Atara went to Aurangabad and was smitten with its fort and rich past.

I reached Aurangabad after a 12 hour bus ride from Mumbai as my day-long photography tour to a photogenic marvel of medieval architecture called the Daulatabad fort. Its main attraction is Andheri — a dark zig-zag passage through which a guide holding a burning torch leads you into secret chambers that were accessible once only to a select few chosen by ancient kings.

This fort is a combination of military engineering, town planning and water management systems. It consists of structures like stepped wells, reservoirs, minars, hammams, temples, mosques besides unfinished rock-cut caves.

The defence system of the fort consists of two moats, three encircling fortification walls, the strategic position of gun turrats and Andheri.

It is said that sufism spread in the Deccan from here and saint
Janardhana Swami, guru of Eknath, attained samadhi. Winter is the best time to visit here.
