Be it historical events, mythological legends, popular sports or gripping reality shows — gaming transcends all categories to find its hard-core gamers and also convert the newbies into its fold.
Says Alok Kejriwal, CEO, Games2win, “Gaming is the next frontier in entertainment because of its highly interactive nature.” Popular TV programmes, sports, quiz shows, movies, historical events etc seem to easily make their way onto gaming platforms like the mobile and computer.
“We just launched a game titled ‘Apollo 11 Mission to the Moon’ marking the 40th year of man’s landing on it. We have evolved a new format by marrying history with gaming and called it ‘histo-gaming’,” says Kejriwal. “When a person games, his level of awareness of that particular event shoots up as much as 80-90% as compared to learning it from textbooks,” avers Kejriwal.
“Cricket is the No 1 sport in India and in gaming too it is the most popular game of choice among the sports category,” says Vishal Gondal, CEO, India Games. The company recently launched the popular T-20 cricket championship wherein it allows the gamers to choose from over 16 top notch international teams and play in any of the 12 stadiums from all over the world. They can also listen to commentary and win the coveted championship trophy at the end of the game! The game enjoys a one hour free trial thereafter the gamer has to pay to buy the game.
Reality show Rakhi Ka Swayamvar was introduced by Zapak and was a huge hit with gamers. “The online model works well because it is simple and easy to download,” says Arun Mehra, chief marketing officer, Zapak. Taking a different view from the others in this field, Mehra says, “Online gaming is bigger than mobile gaming because the depth of the platform allows for an enhanced experience which isn’t possible on a mobile phone.” Other popular games by the company include ‘Salman Khan being chased by the paparazzi’, and MTV’s ‘Fast and Gorgeous.’
Says Noarman Kazi, producer-project manager, Mauj Telecom, “Mauj’s most popular games proved to be based on the Mahabharata. Mythological events like Abhimanyu’s chakravyuh and another on Bheeshma got brought in gamers big time.” Their cricket-based game titled Super Cricket was also well received.
