If you have had the opportunity to catch a theatrical adaptation of Herge’s Tintin in London’s West End, you might have been lucky. But for all those who haven’t, the first ever Indian stage production on the eternally young detective by city-based theatre group Akvarious will soon premier in the city. Based on two Tintin comic books — The Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun — theatre director Akarsh Khurana is undertaking the task of playing around with 40 characters on stage.

Akarsh admits that his love for Herge’s most famous creation initiated the making of this play titled The Adventures of Tintin. He says, “I noticed that a lot of children nowadays don’t read a lot. Maybe reading habits are changing. However, a lot of people of my generation have read and loved it (Tintin comics).”

He also adds that adapting Tintin was the amalgamation of various elements — the right amount of action, comedy and adventure on stage.”

Also the fact that Tintin is already an established brand helps garner public interest for his play. Akarsh says, “Basically half the battle is won when you choose good sourced material. A plot that works along with interesting characters is what makes a good adaptation.”

However, the biggest challenge for the group was to turn this very visual and colourful comic strip into something that would work within the confines of the limited space that the stage at Prithvi Theatre has. Khurana accepts it was hard work, “It is tougher to adapt a comic into a play than a book. Tintin comics are so visual and people already have set images in their minds. It is harder to live up to that.”

“However the right focus on the plot, characters, experimenting with lights and sounds and a little chutzpah is what makes it into a thoughtful production,” he adds.
