The children at the Ileap art gallery in Juhu could may well be the next Pablo Picasso or Van Gogh.

For when one takes a look at the various works of art adorning the walls, an inner world is created by children for people to explore. Each painting opens the eyes of visitors to the integrity and their power of art.

A first of its kind art gallery in Mumbai is on 3rd Road at Juhu near
Cooper hospital, to encourage the creativity of children and promote the sense of art at a young age.

“My nine-year-old daughter, Vedika is good at art. She has won 25-30 national and international awards. I wanted to motivate her to go beyond just winning awards. More importantly, I wanted to encourage other children who couldn’t afford the resources to display their works of art. There are so many talented children but don’t know how to send in their entries at national or international level. We don’t have any pre-requisite that children should belong to any part of society or come from a fancy art school,” said Noopur Kanchan, founder of the art gallery for children.

“Being a teacher, I know appreciation from peers highly motivates children. Children not interested in art have actually started learning art. Art helps kids express themselves, helps in the development of the child. It gives meaning to their thoughts,”
said Kanchan. She says she has no financial motivation behind setting up the art gallery. Not surprising that all works of art are displayed for free.

“Our gallery is blocked till December 2010.Now there’s a possibility to put up entries and participate even in national and international events. Ive seen a significant interest in the endeavour from many parents,” added Kanchan.

“My younger one is only five years old but she is motivated and when her work is exhibited it boosts her morale,” said Ashwini Sankhe, a parent. Children show their work to their panel of art teachers. Once approved, it is displayed on the available or chosen slot by booking it in advance. Children’s profiles are also displayed.
