Designers vouch for the fact that the classic sari and Anarkali suit are still very festive
With so many trends being predicted for the festive season, are you a bit hesitant as to what to finally slip into on Diwali?
Designers admit that there are a lot options this season, but when in doubt, just take the classic route and opt for the opulent Indian wear. “It never fails. Trends will come and go, but classic outfits like the sari, lehenga choli, Anarkali suits or well-cut salwar kurtas rarely fail to impress,” says designer Archana Kocchar.
Designer Maheka Mirpuri’s new line, crafted keeping the festivities in mind, highlights vibrant colours and floral patterns with a royal touch to them. “Reflective of the auspicious festive season, you’ll find hues like burnt orange, brick red, fuchsia and aubergine in my collection. Gold is also very prominently and constantly used throughout,” says Maheka, who has also used Indian fabrics like Chanderi, Benarasi and brocade, among others. Designer Azeem Khan observes that the trend of Anarkali suits continues into this season as well. “I’ve done ankle-length kurtas with double-layered satin borders. Saris too have satin borders with three tone embroideries,” he says, adding that you can team them with sexy blouses, for a cocktail effect.
Archana says that opulent lehenga cholis with elegant motifs, zari borders in Indian fabrics are back in demand today. “Fashionistas do like to experiment, but they also like to show off their traditional side when it comes to pujas. It’s the perfect time to indulge in saris with beautiful pallus that can be highlighted if you drape it over the head. Traditional crafts as well as sequinned designs are in demand, depending on the wearer’s personality. Cocktail parties, however, see a heady mix of Indian designs being fused with Western ones,” says Archana.
Designer Raakesh Agravwal says that Indian designs can be highlighted with crystals to infuse that festive appeal. “As clichéd as it sounds, one should pick an outfit that gels with their personality. Shades like bright reds and crimson pinks do justice on fiercely independent and confident personalities. If you don’t want to stand out, you can always opt for outfits in subtle grey, pink, fuchsia, beaten gold and other shades, indicative of the festive ambience,” says Raakesh.
