There’s something hypnotic about clothes that move entirely of their own accord. Chicsters are going gaga over fringe benefits.

In Clothes
The rule of thumb here is minimalism. When picking a fringed piece to wear, silhouette and shape must be graphic, straight, and entirely minimal. Avoid colours other than black, white, and gray. And, as a rule, fringe usually works best on dresses, skirts or really bare-cut camisoles. Put all that notice-me fringe on a pair of pants or even a jacket, and you’ll look more like a Vaudeville performer rather than the stylish showstopper you actually are!

Says designer Ashish Soni, “Fringe is the trend this season. I think a black dress in chiffon or georgette will look stunning with a little fringe detailing either on the neck or the sleeves. Also, it adds a certain sleek effect to the body structure of the person. For men, I think they should stick to shirts with fringes on the sleeves or near the cuffs.”

Designer Gaurav Gupta adds, “I think the fringe looks good on softer fabrics such as chiffons. The history of the fringe comes from the tribal area, but if this trend is done elaborately, then it can make for couture.”

In Accessories
Rihanna has done it, so has Heidi Klum and Katie Holmes. Fringes on boots and bags are the latest buzzword in fashion. Stylist Priyanka Khanna agrees. “Wearing brown-hued boots with fringes on the edge on a classic white shirt with blue jeans is a sure-shot way to looking sexy this summer.”

The same rule applies to accessories with fringes too, keeping it simple and pretty. Fashion stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania adds in, “Wear them in bright colours but refrain from neon colours such as blues and greens.”

Designer Tarun Tahiliani feels, “Fringe fashion adds an edge of style to any outfit. Even if you are wearing a Plain Jane outfit and team it with a bag, you are ready for the ramp. In India, the fringe has been apparent for hairstyles but clothes and accessories has been a spring/summer trend,” he says, adding, “but just a word of caution — if you don’t believe in it then don’t flaunt it. Otherwise your under-confidence will come across.”
