Navratri is the time to stand out, so sport a splash of colour, insist designers. “For once, standing out, thanks to the variety of shades in your outfit is not a crime. So make use of this opportunity while it lasts,” smiles designer Mandira Wirk.

“But it’s the combination of shades that will decide if you are sticking out like a sore thumb or have managed to turn into a co-dancer’s envy. You cannot fail with shades like deep purples, rusts, tangerines and turmeric. Olive greens, ink blues and festive pinks are a few other choices,” says Mandira.

Designer Raakesh Agarwal says that bright hues can be enhanced with subtle diamantes and sequins: “One can use polkis and crystals on their outfits. They enhance the beauty of an outfit, especially when it swirls while you do the garba.” While cotton is the traditional choice of fabrics for garba dances, people are open to experimenting.

Designer Kaanch Advani says that cotton lehengas with velvet cholis and sheer dupattas are in vogue now. “The idea behind using cotton was that it is light and will keep sweat beads at bay. The choli can be backless with a deep neckline and sheer dupattas to match,” says Kaanch.

Kalidar skirts in georgette, ordained with semi-precious polkis and crystals are another favourite, says designer Rimi Nayak.

“Polkis are used in jewellery but they look beautiful on outfits as well. And yes, bright colours are ruling the roost. Even whites will be laced with colourful borders and eye-catchy dupattas. Going subtle during the festival Navratri is very boring,” says Rimi. So which shade has caught your fancy?
