Mumbai: While Delhi is still preparing to showcase Spring-Summer '09 collections, Mumbai has gone ahead and announced dates for the fashion week in March 2010. Lakme Fashion Week will be held from March 5 to 9, 2010. But there is another surprise. The fashion week will focus on the current and upcoming season.
Wendell Rodricks had written for DNA emphasising the need to have fashion weeks that showcase current trends and not just ape the West. "Why should we? What we show in March gets reactions from people like Tina Tahiliani at Ensemble, Aparna Badlani at Zoya and Sabina Chopra at Aza, all begging to send the collections in April. But we are showing Winter 2009! We show Summer in March and festive in September/October. Down with the so-called pundits of fashion. And who gives a damn about meeting international needs? This in India," wrote Wendell in After Hrs on April 19.
Anil Chopra, advisor, Lakmé agrees: "It is high time we use terminology that suits us and not only the West. Most buyers want clothes delivered within three months, so this move is an appreciated one. In India we are catering to the domestic market and Middle Eastern buyers -- there are minimal buyers from US and UK."
Says a vindicated Wendell, "I've been saying this for a long time. I'm so glad about this move. By the time our clothes reach the stores, most people have copied the cuts, hues and patterns." But Umesh Jivani, a fashion buyer, notes: "Designers should have the infrastructure and the equipment to deliver the goods in a week to ten days, otherwise it is of no use really."
