She is a dancer par excellence but for the world at large she is just the wife of former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly. But Dona, who came to the city to for an Odyssey performance, doesn’t have any problem with that. “I don’t mind. I am very happy that he has become so big. Not many people are so successful,” says the danseuse, who’s well aware that classical dance forms have a negligible following in a country obsessed with cricket.

“Dance belongs to people who are into cultural stuff and people interested in cricket outnumber them anytime. But people who understand dance appreciate my art. I am very happy with whatever attention I am getting,” she adds.

Did she have to make concessions in her dancing career because Sourav’s cricket responsibilities took precedence? “To a certain extent, yes. But I don’t perform five days a week as I have a family and a very young daughter to take care of. But the best thing about dance is that festivals are annual. So even if I miss a year, I know I can do it the next year,” she notes.

Her dance school Diksha in Kolkata now boasts of more than 2,500 students. How much support has she got from Sourav in her venture? “He doesn’t…we don’t need his support in that way. But he doesn’t say no to anything I like because he grew up with me and knows I love dance the way he loves cricket.”

Has life changed for her and Sourav after his retirement? “I think he has become busier after his retirement. He has his own business, the IPL and also a school to take care of, along with a lot of other stuff. He has no time, so life is still the same. The only difference is that earlier he used to stay out of the house most of the time but now he stays indoors.”

The Prince of Kolkata’s wife reveals he’s actually an introvert and dislikes partying. “Whatever free time he gets, he prefers spending it with the family.” Since Sourav’s career had major ups and downs, Dona admits it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. “Those were the testing times. Thankfully, he had the belief in himself and he proved everybody wrong. He thought something wrong had happened to him and he gave his 100 per cent to make a comeback. But we have no complaint about it,” she says.
