Here’s a group art show titled Vibrant Palettes that brings together nine artists from different corners of India bound together by the response to their local cultural ethos. “A striking aspect is despite their differences, each artist has struck a dialogue with the same forum of sensibilities,” says Parvez Kabir, art and history lecturer from Santiniketan.
He prefers to call himself a mediator between the artist and the viewer rather than a curator of the exhibition because “I didn’t choose the artists myself, the gallery did, though I agree with their choice,” he clarifies.
Artist HR Das’ canvases portray varied facets of the bull in all its glory. One particular painting titled Returning Home showcases a herd of charging bulls depicting their power and speed. “I come from Bardhaman, a small town in West Bengal where bulls and goats outnumber humans,” he says, explaining his fascination for the animal.
Hyderabad-based artist Chippa Sudhakar shows off two mixed mediums where dreams merge with reality. In one of his works there’s an image of an archer which dominates the art work and bridges the gap between desire and fulfillment. Also seen is a juxtaposition of traditional motifs with a carefully orchestrated architectural space. “My teacher recognised my talent for painting and encouraged me to further my interest in art during my tenth standard,” he recalls fondly.
Baroda-based artist Arunima Sanyal’sartwork titled Blindfold represents the changes in human lives. “The elements such as the egg tray with the eggs and a hand grenade are theatrical in its sensibilities. My intention was to interpret the world through a metaphor,” she explains.
The mummified man represents the helpless condition educated people feel in today’s life which numb their very being. “The saw with four human teeth on its blade depicts violence and sarcasm of being involved with the entire process of brutality,” adds the twenty-seven-year old.
Artist Mahmud Husain’s paintings reflect his happy childhood spent in Assam. “My paintings are child-like and infused with oodles of bright colours — something I sketch when I want to recall my early days,” he says.
Catch Vibrant Palettes at Point of View Gallery, Colaba, till December 5.
