Artist Jason Hackenwerth was specially flown down all the way from New York to Mumbai to create the huge 165 kilogram installation for World AIDS Day. The aim was to spread the message of AIDS awareness and work is displayed at the Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus where the aam janta can also view it.
Jason, who is renowned for creating big sculptures and installations from balloons, hopes that his work is displayed in the city, for a few days at least. “We have used thousands of balloons and condoms to make this installation and many local artists have helped me accomplish this task. We have worked non-stop for 10 hours for the last five days to create this work,” he says.
So, how does he feel on its completion? Jason replies, “I am relieved. We had lots of fun creating this work, but there were many difficulties.” With some probing Jason elaborates, “There were many roadblocks, the permission to display the work near the station, to finding a suitable place to make the work, and worst of all, to make the work in multiple pieces. I didn’t get a big enough place to make the entire piece, so I had
to make it in parts, something that I have never done before.”
Jason has travelled and displayed his works in many countries like Venice, Paris, Korea and Spain among others. Post his first trip to the city, he is left with mixed reactions.
“While I am amazed by the beauty, colour and old architecture of Mumbai, I am horrified seeing the poverty. But I surely would like to come here again and explore a little more.”
