Mumbai: If there was ever a time when specially designed kidswear was popular, it has to be now.
Internationally, of course, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' daughter Suri Cruise has been making waves with her fashion statements for quite some time. And while all of us can't afford to have the kids indulge in uber-chic, there's certainly nothing stopping them from being trendy.
"Mumbai and Goa don't have much of a winter, so a layered look with cotton jerseys and Madras check shirt or a waistcoat over a turtle neck and jeans would be the ideal ensemble. This is also a good time to work with accessories and keep the clothes simple. So the shoes are very important; they can be paired with interestingly bright coloured socks or leggings. Even crotchet belts can be woven into the look and colours such as olive, blue, beige and burgundy are doing well," says Savio Jon, who has been designing kidswear for a long time now.
As a kidswear designer, and mother, Ritu Beri says it's amazing how much kids enjoy dressing up. "I guess more than that, it's interesting to see how particular they are with their choices. The look for kids is fun and colourful but the most important factor is always comfort. There is a lot of layering, like skirts over tight jeans or leggings and waistcoats over frilly blouses with military inspired jackets. And of course, lots of fun tees as they are a favourite with kids of all ages," she points out.
Then there's the kidswear label Nyssa which is run by Mitali Kothari with Saloni and Deepa Kripalani. Says Deepa, "We avoided doing the regular ghagras and kurtas. Instead, we focused on fun dresses for girls. So you will find shimmer added with gota and even printed lining that shows through the net fabric. The colour palette has fluorescent colours and even psychedelic prints."
