Children from the Budhan Theatre group stole the hearts of the audience at the Mudra Institute of Communication, Ahmedabad (MICA) on Friday evening, impressing all with their acting talent during the finals of a competition hosted by the institute’s theatre club, Sankalp. The one-act play competition held at the MICA auditorium, organised in collaboration with BigFlix, Croma and ibobo.com, was open to colleges, corporate firms and theatre groups from across the country.
The group of 12 children of the Budhan Theatre group opened the evening, staging an adaptation of a celebrated folk tale from Chhattisgarh, Charandas Chor penned by Habib Tanvir.
Others participating in the competition were a team from the Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, two corporate teams — Spandan Mishra and Group and Siddharth Mishra and Group, and two teams from MICA. The finalists had been shortlisted on the basis of videos uploaded on ibobo.com.
“The event was a great opportunity for the children to perform and showcase their talent,” said Dakxin Bajrange Chhara, an award-winning filmmaker, playwright, actor, director and activist from Ahmedabad.
Spandan Mishra and Group, a corporate team from Mumbai, bagged first prize with their rendition of a play titled The Diary. The play, a contemporary take on love, relationships and separation featuring a young married couple, was written and directed by Mishra, an alumnus of MICA who was the director of Sankalp while studying at the institute. Also, the lead actor in The Diary, Supriya Gokarn, was recognised as the best actor of the night for her performance.
Second place in the one-act play competition went to Siddharth Mishra and Group, which staged a play on the evolution of women through the ages.
MICA will hold other theatre activities in November and December, culminating in the final production of Silence – The Court Is In Session, an adaptation of a Vijay Tendulkar play at Natarani on December 4 to 6.
