Limited edition prints of paintings by masters of Indian contemporary art like Manjit Bawa, Atul Dodiya, VS Gaitonde, MF Hussain, A Ramachandaran, Ram Kumar, SH Raza, Jehangir Sabavala, and FN Dsouza, are on display at the Hacienda art gallery. Held in collaboration with Art Intaglio and curated by Dilip Ghewarya, today is the last day of the exhibition which began on January 7.
The prints are ‘photomechanical prints’ where the original work is photographed and then reproduced on other mediums.
“Reproductions are a replica of an existing painting. They are called photo-mechanical prints, usually printed by offset, and are more affordable. In this show, Manjit Bawa’s prints are reproductions,” said Dilip Ghewarya, the curator of the show.
“Fine Art Prints are not exact replicas. Prints by SH Raza, Jogen Chowdhury and Ramkumar are in this category.”In the case of Original Graphic Prints, the prints are original but they exist in multiple editions. There is no pre-existing artwork in this case. The Jayashri Burman print falls in this category.
The largest print on display is by SH Raza and the smallest is by FN Souza. All prints are limited edition prints, numbered and signed by the artist.
The photo-mechanical reproductions are made by offset on paper. Fine art prints may be made by serigraph (silk screen) or digital inkjet.
Original Graphic Prints are made by Etching, Lithograph etc and they cost around Rs20,000 to Rs1,00,000. However, one wishes for the original painting to be displayed alongside the print to compare.
