Today is going to be a fun day. Not because it’s a Sunday (in our profession we never really get to experience the true meaning of a Sunday anyway) but because it is Menswear Day, at the fashion week of course. This one day specially dedicated to menswear really took off last year when this concept was introduced, and has been received quite well.
Angad Bedi, who just got back from Delhi said, “I just finished up with the India Men’s Week in Delhi where we did more than 12 shows each and immediately thereafter I’m in Mumbai now for the Lakme Fashion Week. It has been a great season for us boys with tons of shows back-to-back and even here in Mumbai I will be doing about a dozen shows which has never been the case earlier as not much importance was given to men’s clothing like it is today.”
Aquin Pais too is quite impressed with this whole fashion for men mania and that the boys will finally get to be in the limelight. “If I have to compare the two, Lakme is definitely more organized as compared to the Delhi men’s week that just took place. The designers show up on time and things move on smoothly. I guess because Lakme has been in the business for longer.”
So with the male models feeling happy and not like a minority anymore, designers too are breaking away from concentrating only on women’s wear. Like Rocky S and Krishna Mehta haven’t done any women’s line this time. But designers like Troy Costa and Lecoanet Hemant who always concentrated on menswear have finally been understood.
I caught up with all the boys in the model lounge (they are either there eating away or in the gym) and they all looked quite happy to have more than just food on their plate off late. They do acknowledge the fact that even though they have had all these shows to do back-to-back, they still manage to find a lot of time to themselves as unlike us girls they don’t have to spend hours getting make-up and hairstyling done. Yes, there is some amount of competition between the boys but most of them get along quite well. Except for a few who can’t stand the sight of each other so they prefer to sit in their green room staring in the mirror at themselves instead.
So today should be quite entertaining. With all-male shows all day, there will be some serious testosterone backstage… and I’m not complaining at all!
