“I would feel like a stranger in my own country,” declares chef Sarjano, who after living in India for the past 32 years claims he has more Indian blood than Italian running through his veins! Though the chef has a restaurant in Goa — food for him epitomises a way of life, an expression of his love and gratitude.
This 66-year-old chef is unlike a lot of his people his age. His zest for life and his disturbingly strong passion for food keeps him perpetually surrounded by friends. But he reveals that he is looking for one special Indian woman who he can marry.
Sarjano came to India in 1977 in search of a deeper meaning to life and found solace at Osho Ashram in Pune. He stayed on, making great friends with the master (Osho)himself and became the resident chef, feeding all the followers egg plant parmesan, gnocchi al gorgonzola, among other Italian home-made delicacies. On the back of this photographer, master chef and columnist’s book is a quote from Osho saying, “Those who have eaten
from his hands have tasted enlightenment in his spaghetti!”
The USP of his restaurantin Goa — My Place — lies in the fact that it’s open 365 days a year! “So you can come over anytime for a country-style meal of ravioli di spinaci e ricotta, pizza alla marinara, pasta e fagioli, lasagna alla bolognese etc. I feel best when I am feeding people and what better way to do so than by preparing simple but honest food,” he ends.
