Photographs by members of the Ahmedabad Bicycling Club (ABC) on their journey from Manali to Khardung La pass via Leh transports the viewers to another world. The exhibition of pictures, currently on display at the Ravi Shankar Raval Kala Bhavan, was inaugurated by renowned billiards player, Geet Sethi on Friday.

Eight cyclists from ABC, Atul Karwal (Joint commissioner of police, Sector II), Dr Harsh Shah, Vivek Shah, Gaurav Shah, Jaikrishna Agarwal, Haresh Mevada, Tushar Patel and Satpalsing Chhabda, rode over 500 kms on their bikes, in an expedition that lasted from August 28 to September 6, 2011.

“Before actually embarking upon this strenuous journey, we prepared ourselves by cycling three times a day on the Abu Road to Mount Abu, which is 250kms long. We also cycled for 100-200 kms every day, to further train ourselves. During the continuous eight day training period, the cycling path took us through various passes which were 14,000 - 17,000 feet high”, explained JCP Karwal.

ABC president, Dr Shah said that, “Members of our 90-member club cycle three times in a week. Our aim is to promote cycling in the city and preserve beautiful Mother Nature. We intend to promote the practice of cycling to office among the city-goers, so as to ensure beautiful sceneries preserve their pristine beauty forever.”

Highlighting on the need to put pointers in the cycling lanes within the city, JCP Karwal said that, “In Rajkot, there were four lanes around the race course. And hence during morning traffic, we diverted the vehicular traffic to the outer lanes and the innermost two lanes were dedicated for walkers and skaters. Similarly we should have dedicated cycling lanes in the city for schoolchildren.”

Other than 30-year-old Vivek Shah, all the other bikers were in the age group of 40-45 years.
