This exhibition is just a fun show — simply meant to be viewed and enjoyed. Titled Say Cheese by artist Vipul Salvi, it explores the different kinds of smiles.
Vipul explains, “Smiling is not always a good thing. There are various kinds of smiles. During my wedding reception after about three hours, I was fed up of smiling. So much so that I had almost started scowling at people who later came to greet me.”
He continues, “Through my series of works I am also trying to explore what kind of thoughts are experienced by a person while he is smiling.” The artist totally identifies with the theme of his work as he claims that he loves poking fun at people. He says, “I have asked myself several times, why do I laugh at others? Being honest to myself, I think I like it. I like to have fun.” Tell him that this bold medium of expression might ridicule others, and pat comes the reply, “I don’t care if people trash my show or ridicule it or even tear it apart. It’s a fun show and people who understand that will enjoy the works.”
At this point, we ask him when he has been most laughed at. After much thought and a broad smile later, he narrates this funny story.
“After coming to Mumbai I used to live at Dadar. One day I was chilling at home in my boxers waiting for a friend. Anticipating that my friend had arrived I opened the door to receive him and locked myself outside!” He continues, “I just didn’t know what to do. I had to hang around in the building in my boxers and my liftman, my neighbours — all were laughing at me,” says Vipul.
