While it's great that unlike her contemporaries there seems to be no stopping Madonna, to be honest -- her brand new greatest hits two-CD whopper Celebration might leave many feeling a tinge of S&M that the Queen of Pop has always perpetuated: Some pleasure, some pain. While the album cover artwork by Mr Brainwash is all very hip and new-agey, the album contents are, unfortunately, more old-agey. Besides only two new songs, this compilation doesn't throw up much else a hardcore Madonna-ista hasn't heard before.
But first, for the good. Any new song from Madonna is a reason to rejoice, and getting two instead, is a surprise slam. Revolver, which is a feat with Lil Wayne, is groovy in a sing-along-pop way and the title track, Celebration, is pure dance -- and sounds like the one track Madonna regrettably forgot to include in her Confessions on a Dance Floor. Well, they both astound with their spirit and hipness considering her career is now in its 26th year, and are bound to be nightclub floor-burners (if not already!).
The rest of the two-CD pack sees a lot of the Madonna hallmarks -- Like a Virgin, Material Girl, Into the Groove, Ray of Light, Hung Up, etc -- however, there are several glaring omissions like True Blue, Bad Girl, Rain and Human Nature. Which makes one wonder who or how the "greatest" tracks featured here were picked? Maybe two CDs is wishful thinking to encapsulate the length and breath of this incredible performer and a four CD box-set is being planned for future. If that's the case, perhaps Titillation rather than Celebration would have been a more appropriate title!
