The Head Start theatre festival
Two plays — Let’s Dig In and Tales of Kutty — back to back, two days in a row, feature ensemble casts and performers in varied age groups.
Let’s Dig In is a play in English, devised by students of the Head Start Educational Academy. The play tries to find out the special in the ordinary, the interesting in the banal, and stories that always miss us by — stories that we know but we don’t seem to remember. The play attempts to look at the most unusual thing in the usual through the eyes of the children and hence enables them to raise questions about the society which they are part of.
Tales of Kutty on the other hand, is set in a fictional town in Tamil Nadu. The play revolves around the life and dreams of the Kutty family. The play takes a look at the dreams and aspirations nurtured by the townsfolk for the youth, simultaneously examining how these expectations reflect upon youth’s own understanding of their place in society and their way of looking at societal concepts like ambitions and failure. The play was awarded the First Runner-Up Prize at the Sultan Padamsee Award for Playwriting in 2011.
