The Bombay Art Society has turned 121 years and boasts of members like Jamini Roy, MF Husain, Cawasji Jahangir and many others. The society is showing few of the best 235 works of the professional and emerging artists of the country at the Jehangir art gallery till January 17.

Vijay Raut, president of the society, says, “This year we received about 4,000 entries out of which 235 were selected to exhibit their works at this prestigious exhibition. And out of these 235 a select few were awarded with special awards.”

He adds, “This society was formed to encourage the young artists and create a platform for them to showcase their works. We have been hosting this event for almost a century now and it has always been very well received.”

Mumbai-based artist Mahua Roy is ecstatic as one of her works is also being displayed at the same show. She has won a lot of appreciation for her bronze sculpture of a lady in nude.

She says, “My sculpture is titled Unwinding. My lady in the relaxed posture is unwinding from all her thoughts and her clothes. I am trying to depict the openness and the feeling of ‘letting it out’ through this work.” The award for the best professional sculpture was also bagged by a woman artist — Rupali Madan. She says, “I am glad that my work in stone, titled Unity was appreciated by the jury.”

Also, the lifetime achievement award titled Rupadhar was also bestowed upon Padmashree Ram Sutar from Delhi — one of the most renowned sculptors of the country.
