Mumbai: Artworks from Poland are being showcased in Mumbai at the ICIA gallery (Institute of Contemporary Indian Art). The show, titled Ways of Imagination, will exhibit the art works of 18 young Polish artists.
The brain child of the show, the Polish consul general in Mumbai, Janusz Bylinski says, "The aim of the exhibition is to show art of our place in India. We want Indian art collectors and art connoisseurs to get introduced to Polish art."
He adds, "We are also planning to felicitate art trips for a few Indian artists to Poland, for them to see the art and know more about it."
Ask him why the sudden interest in popularising Polish art in India and Janusz replies, "Indian art and culture is quite popular in Poland. There are many fans of Bollywood movies in Poland. And moreover, as far as music is concerned we have many Indian artists perform along with Polish artists and create fusion music."
He continues, "We also have a band called India Lucia that demonstrates affinity between Flamenco, gypsy music and traditional Indian music. Basically we want to felicitate a cultural exchange among the two countries." Janusz claims that every year there is some kind of a cultural programme held in India by them that highlights Poland art and culture in India. "It's either a music show or a film screening or a dance performance and this year it is the art show."
Getting back to Polish art, he says that modern Polish art is diversified. "It follows all the modern trends and it's not imitative but very creative. It is determined by the culture, tradition and history of the country."
