Ronu Mazumdar rose to fame after he played the famous Hero tune for a DJ Nasha remix ten years ago. Post that, he has been doing a lot of experimenting work with albums like Travellers Tales which was inspired from his travels since the age of 10.

This time around, he decided to bring back to life some of the melodies that he felt were dying and did tributes to people whose work he has loved. Mazumdar has played the flute without taking a single breath for six minutes for the song Breathless Flute in his latest album by the same name, as a tribute to Shankar Mahadevan and Kenny G.

“It is inspired from Shankar Mahadevan’s album Breathless and Kenny G’s album by the same name, which have been my favourites,” he says, adding, “I have played it continuously for five-and-a-half minutes, with the use of circulating breathing system which most of us use,” says Mazumdar.

Ronu has also done a flute version of Michael Jackson’s We Are The World. “It is my favourite MJ song and I had played it just two days before his death. So there’s a spiritual reason why I decided to do this song. MJ wrote this song for those who suffered in the Vietnam War and it’s special,” he says.

Mazumdar believes that musicians are in a good position to carry a message to people. “Music is for the joy of it but we can send a greater message too. Western musicians do loads of road shows to connect with their audiences and interact with them. I want to do that.”
