Pimples and acne scars continue to be one of the top skin issues faced by men and women across the globe. And the latest treatment to address this issue comes endorsed by the youngest Keeping Up With the Kardashian stars. Kylie and Kendall Jenner are fans of the slush facial which works by exfoliating the skin, clearing pores and improving the skin. In a recent episode of sister Khloe Kardashian’s reality show, Revenge Body, their dermatologist Christie Kidd revealed about their go-to facials. She used dry ice coated with liquid nitrogen along with acetone on her client’s face. Dermatologists tell us if this works...

Old treatment that’s back

This is an age-old treatment explains, Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, MD Skin, Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Trasi’s Clinic & La Piel. “Before lasers came into being, dry ice was used for acne and acne scars. In fact, it was prevalent during my grandfather’s time and was slowly discontinued with the advent of lasers. Dry ice helps in exfoliating and also has anti-bacterial qualities. It decreases oil production and reduces acne scars. Acetone also works as a good cleanser. It’s still used to clean the face before certain procedures like skin polishing and chemical peeling,” says Dr Shefali. It is however not a home treatment. She further warns that this is not suitable for people with very dark skin tones as it can either lead to hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. It can cause swelling and redness if not done professionally.

Helps exfoliate oily skin

Slush facials are technically called dry ice cryotherapy and are used by dermatologists for clearing the skin from acne, says Dr Manjiri Puranik, Cosmetic Physician, Insta-sculpt. “Dry ice helps in reducing the pores of the skin and thereby further decreasing scarring. Acetone itself is a drying agent and it considerably helps the oily skin to reduce the acne formation. No matter how bizarre it sounds, if performed by a professional, it is an easy way to exfoliate oily skin. It works by gently exfoliating the skin with dry ice that’s been wrapped in gauze and dipped in acetone. It cleanses the skin, decreases bacteria, and soothes inflammation associated with acne. The upper layer of skin is shed off where the skin is treated, eliminating any comedones (whiteheads and blackheads). It also helps in unclogging pores thus helping in further reduction of acne development. This causes mild exfoliation, so is often added to other skin treatments.

Other acne treatments

Dr Priyanka Reddy, Founder and Medical Director of DNA Skin clinic says she has not done a slush facial. The treatments she generally does for acne include oral treatments, topical applications and procedures that comprise chemical peels and laser treatments. She also recommends medi-facials to remove the dirt and oil from the skin. “For acne prone skin, one should focus on controlling the sebum/oil content of the skin. It’s important to keep the skin clean to reduce the infection. Depending on the type of lesions the patients come with, the treatment is decided. Microdermabrasion and chemical peels can also help.” says Dr Reddy.
