Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Aniston and Michael Phelps have all been spotted in the past with unusual round suction type marks on their back. Cupping, which is an ancient technique, has won many fans for its benefits that include draining toxins from tissues, improving circulation, and giving pain relief. Now stars like Kim Kardashian West are discovering it works just as well for the face. The reality star recently posted a picture on her Snapchat prior to treatment. This one is more gentle than the body treatment. Various sized cups are applied on parts of the face, creating a vacuum-like sensation. It’s said to give skin an instant boost.

Helps to some degree

Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, MD Skin, Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Trasi’s Clinic and La Piel says Cupping therapy dates back to ancient Egypt, Asia and Middle East. “This is a form of alternative therapy in which cups are placed on the skin to create suction in order to increase blood flow, reduce inflammation and activate lymphatic drainage. The suction applied on the skin during the process helps in increasing the circulation and the lymphatic drainage of the treated area. This helps to some degree. Mild redness and swelling for half an hour to one hour in most clients is expected. Mild bruising is seen if more suction is applied. Dryness and rash might occur if the patient has dry and sensitive skin. However, the changes induced by it are temporary.” she adds.

No downtime needed

Dr Monisha Kapoor, Plastic and cosmetic surgeon says cupping facials are part of acupuncture therapy to boost skin circulation further modified to suit modern times. “It does have a beneficial role to play in anti-ageing by improving the circulation of skin. It’s available in India at our centre for the past two years and a lot of clients have benefitted from this treatment. It employs a negative pressure cup that is either kept stationary or moving depending upon the requirements for which it’s being used. It takes a total of 30 minutes for the face and there’s no downtime for the same. Immediately the skin looks plumped up with diminished lines and wrinkles.”

Treats acne and rosacea

Dr Bharti Magoo, celebrity aesthetician, and dermatologist says while it may be currently in vogue, this technique has been used since a long time. “This process in somewhat similar with acupuncture. In acupuncture, we apply tiny cuts so that the bad blood could drain out. In Cupping, the suction technique is used to get rid of bad blood. We apply this technique to treat acne, pimple, rosacea, harpies etc on the face.  Different sized cups are used in this technique, their size may vary from one cm to five cm. With the help of these cups we apply pressure on the capillaries to get rid of the bad blood, which is the main cause of these skin issues. Depending on the seriousness of the problem, the sitting sessions would be finalised. But only one session can be done in a month and at least three plus sessions are required on an average,” she adds.
