1. Show up on time: You have waited for this job and this day. Make sure you get a good night's sleep so that you can get to your new workplace in time. You need to be mentally sharp and physically ready while meeting new faces and absorbing a great deal of information.

2.  Keep an open mind: While you will probably have no real job responsibilities on this first day, don’t interpret this as an invitation to slack off. Position yourself as the star pupil by asking questions and showing curiosity; just know where to draw the line between enthusiastic and annoying. You may think you know a lot about your new company, but there are still plenty of things to learn, like how its culture works and how people behave. To find out more, keep your eyes and ears open. Besides, listening is a great way to earn people’s confidence.

3. Be composed and confident: Be confident in your ability: If you’re nervous, keep reminding yourself that this is your first day – it’s not another interview; you’ve already got the job so your employer must have preferred you to the other candidates. Believe in yourself and your ability to do the job you were hired to do, and show the company that they were right in their decision to take you on.

4. Don’t be too friendly too quickly: Since you don’t know the people too well, try not to make judgements about anyone just yet. For all you know, that grumpy chap is actually a sweetheart and is just having a bad day; or maybe that accommodating co-worker is the official workplace gossip looking for recruits. Avoid cliques and get acquainted with people first.

5. First Day, First Show: Never make arrangements on your first day to meet a friend for lunch or immediately after work, no matter how tempted you might be. You want to be free to accept any invitations from your new colleagues. They may have plans for you that’ll help break the ice. It’s much easier to get to know colleagues in a less formal environment away from the office, such as over lunch or a post-work drink.
