Feeling tempted to give yourself a break from your morning jog and walks during the winters? Well, you're not the only one. Many people succumb to ditching their exercise regime and cosying up in bed under a warm blanket instead because of laziness and simply because it's colder outside. But little did you know that in fact, winter is the best time to indulge in a rigorous workout.

Read on to know why...

'Tis the best time to sweat it out
“Winter is a great time for some high intense training because the nutritional requirements of the body becomes higher. Also, the digestive system works at an optimum level, making the body respond better to working out. During summers, the digestive system is not that effective, there occurs frequent dehydration, higher temperatures that don't make workouts effective,” explains Mickey Mehta, fitness expert.

Good time to build health
According to Ayurveda, winter is the best time for one to boost health. The body utilises as much nutrition as it can. Therefore, it's a good time to indulge in healthy fats and fats like butter, ghee, etc. but in moderation, says Mickey adding that this season is also great for doing rigorous pranayams too.

Do thorough warm-ups to avoid injuries
The first commandment of exercising is doing warm-ups. Many people brush it off as something silly but they are so wrong! Ideally, a warm-up of 10 minutes is mandatory to prevent the risk of injuries like sprains, muscle pull, etc. Mehta says that during winters is imperative to do a thorough warm up. “Doing a 10-minute warm is good for the rest of the year, however, during winters one should pay more attention to it and do a 15-minute warm up because the body gets cold due to the temperature and it needs sufficient heat to facilitate a high intense workout,” he explains.

Do more cardio and high intense strength training
Running, swimming, cycling, using the elliptical cross trainer constitute cardiovascular activity.

During the summers, cardio sessions lasting 15-20 minutes is good, however, during winters one can extend cardio sessions from 30-45 minutes, says the holistic health guru. And if one is going to go the extra mile by increasing the duration of cardio, then why leave strength training behind? Go for high intense strength training too.
