Allows you to be unbiased and forgiving
As each day brings us new challenges, new experiences, new highs and lows, we keep changing and evolving, and like us, so do other people. Being in the now, enables that you know people as they are today.  It helps you notice, appreciate and understand their changes. You won’t judge them or grudge them based on their past. In this way you have a more real view of them and will hence find it easier to forgive them their past mistakes.

Reduces your insecurities
Besides others, you will also not judge yourself by your past or hold on to your past mistakes. While it is right to reflect on your mistakes, it is not right to keep weighing yourself down for how you have erred. Mistakes give us an opportunity to learn, improve and once we do that we should move on. Piling on guilt will only hamper your growth. Hence, being in the now also means that you will be able to appreciate how you have grown, take pride in it and will thereby reduce your insecurities.

Helps you focus better
If you don’t control your mind, your mind will control you. If you keep dwelling in the past, there will be two possibilities. If it’s the good things or successes you’re thinking about, then you probably won’t push yourself hard enough to be better; complacency will set in. And if you are thinking about your failures, it may lower your morale and will probably inhibit you from trying new things, taking risks. You’ll begin to create obstacles for your own self by judging yourself based on what could and couldn’t do earlier. The way from there is only downhill. If you’re only thinking about the then you’ll miss out on enjoying what you have today and even seeing clearly opportunities that you can take advantage of. Whereas being in the present means you understand your current aptitude, likings, necessities, dreams etc. as well as challenges with clarity, and, are more aware of yourself. And that, will allow you to take better decisions. Your mind won’t be constantly pre-occupied, or won’t drift away to unnecessary thoughts; it will be able to focus.
 
Makes you more positive
Self awareness and clarity combined with no or less emotional baggage from the past ensure that your outlook towards life is positive. You will not constantly complain about life, but be able to feel good about the good things and take problems in a stride. There’s no limit to the power of positive thinking.

Ensures you’re a happy person
Being in the present and positive thinking are the surest roads to being happy.
