All work and short sleep may work for Rihanna, but it’s far from ideal. In Vogue Paris’ December issue, the singer and style icon, went on to proudly share, “I only sleep three or four hours a night,” adding that she spends the rest of the time binge-watching documentaries and shows. RiRi is clearly not getting enough shut-eye, and belongs to a growing tribe of professionals labelled short sleepers for their sleeping pattern.

CELEBS WHO SURVIVE ON MINIMUM BEAUTY SLEEP

The Diamonds singer is not the only one who finds it hard to switch off after a long day. Material Girl-singer Madonna also gets by with minimum beauty sleep. Keeping her company is TV host Jay Leno who clocks in four hours on the snooze button. Back home, actor Amitabh Bachchan is known to burn the midnight oil writing his blogs well into the night, while actor Shah Rukh Khan has gone on record to share, “Three to four hours of sleep; that does it for me.” While we may not see any visible signs of this taking a toll on their health, experts caution you against adapting similar sleeping patterns as it could have serious health repercussions.

MEMORY FORMATION COULD BE AFFECTED

Sleep is important for the restoration of the body and the brain, according to Dr Shirish M Hastak, group director — Neurology and Stroke Services from Wockhardt Hospital, who says, “Ideally, one should get six to seven hours of sleep daily, while people above the age of 70 should get at least five hours. Anything less than that is a problem. If you just get by with three to four hours of sleep, you will be drowsy during the day.

Even your memory formation and consolidation is affected, attention span becomes very short and you may end up sleeping excessively in the day to make up for the loss of sleep in the night.” Clearly, the blackouts that singers experience when it comes to forgetting lyrics altogether is not just due to stage fright but can also be attributed to short sleep.

REDUCES REFLEXES

While many believe they’re getting enough sleep even in a span of few hours, what matters is if they are getting quality sleep. Dr Ashim Desai — ENT, Otorhinolaryngologist Apollo Spectra Mumbai, says, “If you are sleeping for only three to four hours, it maybe sufficient but not necessarily quality sleep. And that’s bound to take a toll on you. So, we recommend sleep hygiene. One should switch off/disconnect from digital devices post 9 pm as the blueish white light these devices emit is known to affect sleeping patterns.”

He adds that in some cases, people complain about getting enough sleep, but wake up feeling tired or sluggish, which is an indication of having disturbed or poor quality sleep. “It’s important to find out why you are not getting enough of sleep. In many cases, it’s because of sleep apnea, which reduces the body’s oxygen and the sudden interruption causes micro awakenings through the night. This leads to a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, risk of poorly-controlled hypertension and diabetes. Chronic sleep deprivation also reduces reflexes and almost mimics the poor reflexes after excessive consumption of alcohol,” he concludes.
