Art is a way of life for Aditi Dokania, whose works include  fashion illustrations on everyday objects like coffee mugs, diaries, phone cases and wall art. Armed with a Visual Communication Degree from Raffles Design International, Aditi has previously worked with web and digital agencies. However, when it comes to illustrations, she is self-taught and has evolved over the years with self-learning. Drawing inspiration from some of her favourite things — Disney, coffee, reading, shopping and make up, the Mumbai-based artist, aspires to add a touch of colour, glamour and fashion, through her online portal, The Painted Shoe and her artworks.

Turning Disney princesses into fashion icons

The world of fairy tales is a happy place. A world that Aditi not only loves for its beauty but also draws inspiration from. She says, “My platform, The Painted Shoe’s products have a confident, modern woman in a fairy tale setting. My biggest inspiration, by far, is Disney. Their art, movies and various expressions of creativity have left me spellbound. I can’t recall the number of times I have drawn Ariel and Cinderella. Their effect on me, and my art, has been everlasting, and I’m certain it will continue for the years to come.” And that probably explains why she has used Disney princesses in her artworks, elevating their status from mere fairy tale princesses to fashion icons. The best part, each illustration on her products are feminine and bold, featuring  mixed textures and abstract colours. There is plenty of focus on details such as hair, design and jewellery. What’s more? The Painted Shoe can create customised illustrations on request. Created on handmade paper, Aditi uses  gouache (a type of watermedia), which gives each image an opaque finish.

How her journey began?

Taking a step back in time, Aditi talks about how it all started. She says, “I was working as a web designer but I always wanted to do something on my own. Due to an injury I was forced to take a break. That’s when I went back to the drawing board, and started drawing and painting from home. I shared these on Instagram and got an overwhelming response from people abroad. The feedback was amazing and that gave me the confidence to start my online store in March 2014.” While Aditi started with prints, she then went on to create fashion illustrations on phone cases, notebooks. mugs, decals and soon wants to do cushion covers, trays and framed prints.
