A couple of years ago, when the first hair perfume was launched, most people dismissed it as a one-off product that wouldn't find many takers. Today, perfumes or mists are much in demand with a number of prominent brands like Dior, Chanel, Guerlain and Frederic Fekkai launching their own versions. Aside from adding a fragrance to the hair — that can vary between a fresh citrus to a musky scent — it also adds shine and smoothes locks. While using regular perfumes on ones strands can cause dryness, these not only protect locks but add volume and prevent frizz. Hair perfumes contrary to their name are not very expensive and are a quick and easy way to conceal the smell of unwashed hair.

Can be nourishing
Rikhil Asrani, hairstylist and owner Rikoshé Hair Salon and Academy says hair perfumes have been used abroad since a while. "Maybe it's the rise in pollution and odours in the air that is prompting this surge for such products or it's just the right time to add another dimension to hair grooming. In fact, Label M is all set to launch a hair perfume in India very soon. Hair works as a fabulous diffuser for fragrance. Some of these products are anti-smoke, so they repel the odour of smoke when you're at a party or a gathering. These sprays are usually mixed with nourishing agents like argan oil, so they end up adding a bit of shine as well," explains Rikhil.

Not a necessary product
Most professional shampoos and conditioners have a fragrance that lasts two to three days. Beyond that one should re-shampoo says Elton Steve Vessoaker, creative director, Nalini of Nalini and Yasmin salon. "Products that are created mainly for fragrance do not focus on care and maintaining the hair quality. It's just a perfume. It is not highly recommended but not unsafe either. It can be used at times when the scalp is greasy and smelly and one has no time to shampoo. But using the right shampoos, conditioners and serums which already have great scents is better for hair quality and maintenance," he says.

Adds a sweet scent
Anjoo Karanjia, owner, A'Kreations salon says she is a fan of hair mists. "Your hair will benefit from a sweet scent throughout the day especially on a hot summer day or you can always have your hair smelling great with some shine through the night. "Spraying the hair with fragrance is a great way to leave a gentle scent as well as a nice light shine. It is a luxury product, catering to a certain genre in the market. One can use it on a daily base, but you need to be careful as the product should be sprayed five inches away from the hair as it should not deposit on the scalp," adds Anjoo.
