U can't Trash this

His tracks have become certified club anthems that one can't get enough of. And now, the man behind The End and Reload will show you how the beat goes, as he plays in the city this weekend. But before that, the hard partying Australian DJ Tommy Trash tells Shilpa Bansal all about his set, his classical music background and why he isn't just 'another' EDM artiste.

My expectations are high...
To be honest, I have very high expectations from India and the crowd here. I have heard that the parties here are good and there is so much energy; I’m really very excited.

An unpredictable set...
I like to play my music, but there are a couple of other artistes whose songs I include to make the set exclusive. I never play stuff that I don’t like just to please the crowd. My sets usually have a lot of my music, and this time I have included various private edits that I have made specially for my shows here in India. The set is going to change every night with every city though. So, while the intro song and the ending of the set will remain the same,   everything in between will depend on the crowd, the people and the vibe. I can play anything, so wait for the surprise.

Not like any other EDM artistes...
With so many tunes by so many artistes all available online, it’s not easy to plan a set and be exclusive. But as a deejay,   play  your own music — whether released or unreleased — and there’s no better way to stand out. I always try to be ahead of the rest and not sound similar to the other EDM artistes. I never play the same tracks, and delete the track off the list when I’m sick of it. Agreed, keeping the crowd interested by playing a lot of new stuff and unplayed songs is a big gamble, but you will never know until you test it. For something to become massive, you have got to try it first.

When dance music took over...
I was training in classical music back then at the university in Brisbane. I may have gotten a job as a piano teacher, but I never wanted to get into that. Later, I started playing professionally and I realised that I didn’t want to do that as well. As a hobby, I used to make pop and rock music on my laptop,  which was sounding electronic anyway, and then suddenly somehow dance music took over. Though there was no pressure from my folks to pursue a career in classical music, they were really worried when they got to know that I was going to be a DJ making dance music.

From classical to EDM...
Classical education can be good and bad. It teaches you harmony and classifications and that can really be restrictive. It sets a lot of rules and stops you from thinking. While dance (music) is all about going out of the norm and thinking ahead. This was the biggest challenge for me while transiting from classical to dance music. Now, I feel I have worked a way out and I’m experimenting.

 Music that I have loved...
When I started my career, my biggest EDM influences were Axwell and Eric Prydz. But I have grown up listening to Nirvana, Pearl Jam and The Smashing Pumpkins — I still love listening to those old albums.

 The End’s not the end...
I know now a days artistes are associated with that one popular track created by them, but for me, The End is not the end, it’s just the beginning. I don’t care if people will associate me with that forever. I’m proud of the song and it still gives me a high.

 Moving forward...
2013 was undoubtedly the biggest year for me. It has been a really positive year. I have been working for almost five years and this was the year when it all started coming together. I will be lying if I said I don’t want more success. 2014 will be an interesting one — I’m making more music, more records — all originals and no remixes. And I’m definitely going to take my sound back to the clubs.
