While most 10 and 12-year-old school girls are preoccupied with studies and extra-curricular activities, Aarna and Sunehra Salla are busy launching their own beauty line. The sisters, who are students of DY Patil school, have translated their love for sweet-smelling bath bombs, scrubs and creams into their own venture. Aarna, the older of the two, explains it was their mother, tarot card reader and numerologist Shradha Salla, who got tired of their growing bath collection and suggested the girls make them instead. “A few months ago, we came up with the idea and so far have successfully sold over 100 bath bombs. We are also working on other products such as lip scrubs, soaps, face masks and a hair serum — all which will be child-friendly — made of natural ingredients and safe,” she explains. The girls, have made their products using a variety of oils such as jojoba and olive, castor sugar, essential oils and safe food colouring. They have so far managed to create a buzz through word of mouth and while the products are made in a factory, they’re sold from their home and their mom’s office in Bandra.

Their current summer line of fizzy bath bombs boasts of flavours such as lemon, orange, strawberry and blueberry, and they are planning to launch foam bath bombs next. “I am a big fan of Lush products,” says Aarna, whose bathroom shelves are overflowing with products. “It’s hard to find items such as bath bombs in India and all my friends love using them, so I thought why not create my own.” The sisters have also cleverly crafted their brand logo AS using both their initials A and S joined in an infinity symbol. They spent their summer vacation travelling to Dubai and Singapore looking and researching various kind of bath products. “My older sister is more into the product side, whereas I handle the accounts,” says Sunehra, and both enjoy working on the packaging aspect replete with pretty ribbons and bows. They’ve also made natural soaps in lavender, orange, coconut, cocoa bean and aloe vera varieties.

The girls ensure that they first test out each product before selling them. Their lip scrub formula includes natural ingredients like castor sugar, jojoba or olive oil, colouring and fragrance. Aarna who counts bloggers such as Huda Beauty, Alisha Marie and Bethany Mota as her inspiration, is also keen on expanding into make-up, but that still needs more researching. There’s a peel-off nail polish in the making, that requires no acetone to remove and she also wants to create lip gloss. “My parents definitely helped in the research stage and in finding the right manufacturing factory. It was like doing my homework but more interesting... We also hope to eventually sell our products in retail stores,” adds Aarna.
