If messy hair and effortless styles are your thing, there’s good news for you. The must-do hair trend for the season is the Banana Bun — a slightly dishevelled low bun — reminiscent of French beauties with a laissez faire outlook. The style that works with most hair types, is perfect for second day hair when your roots have become a little dirty but you’re not ready to wash it out yet. Simply pull your locks in a low pony, and then twist into a knot, a few pins to secure them in place and you’re set. This style is perfect for those days when you’re running late and still want to look chic.

Effortless yet chic

Najeeb UR Rehman, Hairstylist and Professional Partnership Services, Director — India says the Banana Bun is a messy version of the French twist. “It can be created in less than a minute by just twisting your hair in a slightly vertical or diagonal shape and securing them with U pins and bob pins. This style requires zero effort and absolutely no professional assistance and yet looks very chic. It can easily be  personalised to an individual’s preference. Indian hair is just perfect for these styles. In fact, messy styles are very popular amongst modern Indian women as they look natural yet edgy,” he adds.

Hair is less structured

There are two major reasons for the popularity of the Banana Bun, explains Adhuna Bhabani, Founder and Creative Director, BBLUNT. “The first being the natural progression in texture that we have witnessed over the last few seasons, not only in hair but in the fashion and beauty industry overall. Hair is definitely becoming less structured, less shiny in terms of finish; while non-fuss hairstyles, mostly unkempt, messy and go-with-the-flow hair is catching the trend for 2017. Convenience and fast-paced lifestyles also contribute to its popularity. The more textured version of a Banana Bun is very easy to do at home and is quite an effortless style. The best thing about these messy styles are that there doesn’t have to be any kind of symmetry or set way of achieving it. It’s almost like these kind of styles look better done by oneself at home. Often, when we are trying to achieve a look similar to this for a shoot or a film, it gets a little difficult because first we have to make it perfect, then mess it up.”

French roll reinvented

Natasha Naegamvala, Director — Nalini of Nalini and Yasmin Salon says as we all know, trends come back in style, and always with a slight twist. “This hair-do is a re-interpretation of the classic French roll, with a messy feel. It is quite easy to do and does not necessarily need any specific length. Once the style is complete, using a hair spray is advised, since hair needs to be kept in place, even if it is messy.”
